{"id":442,"date":"2009-08-31T21:36:51","date_gmt":"2009-09-01T04:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crapmonkey.com\/?p=442"},"modified":"2009-08-31T21:36:51","modified_gmt":"2009-09-01T04:36:51","slug":"augmented-reality-information-at-your-pupils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.crapmonkey.com\/podcast\/?p=442","title":{"rendered":"Augmented Reality &#8211; Information at your Pupils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-447 aligncenter\" title=\"AugmentedReality\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crapmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/AugmentedReality.jpg\" alt=\"AugmentedReality\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The equation above says it all, in a few short years,\u00a0augmented reality is going to explode.\u00a0\u00a0Augmented reality refers to supplementing the real world with contextual computer generated information.\u00a0 While the concept of augmented reality is not new,\u00a0the\u00a0ability to &#8220;take it with you&#8221;\u00a0is just becoming economical.\u00a0 The devices we carry every day (iphones, smartphones) will get smarter and more powerful, the bandwidth connecting us to the net will continue to increase, and the data being crunched for us in the cloud will continue to become more relevant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Already, the GPS information in iphones is changing the way people interact with the world around them.\u00a0 Turn-by-turn directions are combining your location information with map data to get you where you wish to go.\u00a0 Smart applications provide details about real estate by using GPS to understand which property sits in front of you.\u00a0 Social networks can be updated with the click of a button to let your friends know where you are.\u00a0 Even so, in a few years we will shrug when we think about how primitive this technology was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As I write this, applications are being authored that combine the camera, orientation, and GPS information from the phone with data in the cloud to provide rich information about every day things.\u00a0 Just by pointing the camera on your phone to a sculpture in the park, you will get detailed information delivered to your screen about the art and the artist.\u00a0 Pointing at a restaurant might reveal the day&#8217;s dinner and happy hour specials, the wait time for a table, and then provide you a way to place your order as you make your approach.\u00a0 New in town and not sure where to get a bite?\u00a0 Point your device down the street and GPS combined with image recognition will\u00a0present you\u00a0with rich data about the establishments that lie ahead of you.\u00a0 In order to make sense of the enormous amount of data, the information will be easily filterable (Food, Italian, Romantic &#8211; for example) .\u00a0 Many different devices will provide this functionality and it will become clear that the\u00a0hardware at your hip is much more than a phone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-450\" title=\"RID\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crapmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/RID.jpg\" alt=\"RID\" \/>Eventually, companion devices such as smart-glasses (<a title=\"RID\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brother.com\/en\/news\/2008\/rid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Retinal Imaging Display<\/a>), will enter the marketplace.\u00a0 These glasses will connect to your device via technologies like Bluetooth to allow for more convenient access to your information.\u00a0 Think of it as the way Terminator viewed the world, only without the all the red tint and orders to kill people.\u00a0 Information at your fingertips will become information at your pupils.\u00a0 Voice recognition will allow you to easily navigate through the\u00a0data that is being drawn onto the lenses of your eyes.
